Matt Price's new show for 2014 is The Maryhill Dinosaur. The story starts in November 2013 when Matt unexpectedly received a stab vest through the post from his good friend "Stab Vest Steve." That is just one of many stories that demonstrate people's ability to be genuinely surprising and sometimes, a little ridiculous. The title story – The Maryhill Dinosaur - was initially inspired by a mentally ill man called Arthur who believed that he was a dinosaur. He lived in the Maryhill area of Glasgow and was known locally as a harmless (if eccentric) character.
Kate Copstick from the Scotsman newspaper gave Matt four stars at last year's Edinburgh Festival 2013 and described him as, "A terrific comedian and wonderful storyteller." Despite legal and physical threats, the 2013 show went ahead and proved to be a word of mouth hit. The Maryhill Dinosaur is a worthy successor for the 2014 Festival.
Rather than telling the story of running away from the Turkish Mafia armed only with a fork for self-defense (the 2013 show), at this year's Edinburgh Festival Matt Price will embrace all the people who have inspired him ; their quirks, their foibles and the true stories that mark his relationship to them. The one thing that links them all, is their ability to surprise and delight in equal measure.
Find out how Matt was scarred for life on the back of his hand, how his computer scientist father found love in the most unlikely of places, the last two breakdancers in Cornwall, what it's like to be a ghost writer for people in the criminal underworld and how mental illness brought his family together.
It's all told with Matt's trade mark style : "A touching – indeed almost emotive – amount of Price's soul seems to have gone into composing this set. It was straight from the heart – filled with bonhomie, an almost unnoticeable wanderlust and extraordinary candidness, but at the same time underscored by a truy incisive comic brain."
